The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is a rear- or all-wheel drive mid-size pickup truck (the first "car of this format" in the history of the German premium brand), created in cooperation with the Renault-Nissan alliance ...

Its target audience is family people and successful adventurers who lead an active lifestyle and need a versatile vehicle, business owners and various companies, as well as successful landowners and farmers ...

As a concept, the "truck" first appeared before the general public at the end of October 2016 (as part of a special show in Stockholm, Sweden), its serial prototype celebrated its premiere on July 18, 2017 (at an official event in the legislative capital of South Africa - Cape Town) ... and by in the spring of 2018, he reached Russia.

The car borrowed the frame, power structure of the cab and some other components and assemblies from the Japanese model Nissan Navara, but at the same time received as many as three exterior design options, a "family" interior and, according to the automaker itself, the perfect balance between premium comfort and off-road capabilities.

Outside, the Mercedes-Benz X-class leaves an ambiguous impression: it seems to be perceived as a real Mercedes, albeit a cargo one, but the roots of the Japanese “source” can be traced too clearly in its appearance.

From the "face" - this is a one hundred percent representative of the Stuttgart brand, flaunting graceful headlights, a "family" radiator grille with a huge "three-beam star" and a raised bumper.

From the rest of the angles, the pickup is devoid of any frills: an unpretentious silhouette with a billowing sill line and rounded-square wheel arches and a simple stern with vertically oriented lights and a characteristic tailgate.

It is worth noting that the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is offered with three exterior design options:

  • Pure - the simplest, with an unpainted front bumper and 17-inch steel wheels
  • Progressive - it has body-colored bumpers and light-alloy wheels;
  • Power - its body is distinguished by an increased amount of chrome.

It is a mid-size pickup truck with the corresponding dimensions: 5340 mm long, 1819 mm high and 1920 mm wide. The wheelbase of the car has a 3150 mm gap, and its ground clearance is 202 mm (for a surcharge, the clearance can be increased to 221 mm).

In equipped form, the "German" weighs from 2102 to 2259 kg, depending on the modification, and its carrying capacity is 1042 kg.

Inside the Mercedes-Benz X-class, the motives of the brand's SUVs and crossovers can be traced - the flat front panel in the central part boasts a protruding 7-inch multimedia center screen, four ventilation deflector nozzles and laconic audio and microclimate units. The beautiful three-spoke steering wheel and the informative instrument cluster with the color screen of the on-board computer do not stand out from the general style ... True, in cheap trim levels the interior of the pickup has a less noble look.

In the interior of the car, good-quality finishing materials are used, and as an option for it, many options for upholstery of seats with both fabric and leather are declared.

"Apartments" at Mercedes-Benz X-Class are for five people. The front riders are assigned to ergonomically profiled chairs with unobtrusive side bolsters and wide adjustment intervals, and a full-fledged sofa with a cushion length slightly shortened in the center is installed in the back.

The side platform of a pickup truck is 1587 mm long, 1560 mm wide, and 474 mm high (it is designed in such a way that a Euro pallet would fit transversely there).

As an option, the car body can be retrofitted with mounting holes, aluminum partitions, soft covers or a full-fledged rigid superstructure with internal LED equipment.

There are three diesel modifications for the "X-class":

  • Basic machines contain under the hood a four-cylinder dCi diesel with a working volume of 2.3 liters with direct Common Rail fuel and a 16-valve timing:
    • on version X220d it is equipped with a single turbocharger and produces 163 horsepower at 3750 rpm and 403 Nm of available torque at 1500-2500 rpm;
    • under the hood X250d there is a bi-turbo engine generating 190 hp. and 450 Nm of ultimate thrust at identical revs.

    In both versions, the motor mates with a 6-speed "mechanics", and in the "older" - also with a 7-band "automatic" Jatco. By default, the entire power reserve goes to the rear wheels, and for a surcharge, the car relies on a rigidly connected all-wheel drive with a 100 percent rear differential lock and a lowering row.

  • "Top" option X350d Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 unit with a 24-valve turbocharger and direct fuel injection system, which produces 258 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque.
    The automatic transmission 7G-Tronic Plus and permanent four-wheel drive with a power distribution in a ratio of 40:60 in favor of the rear, "lowering" and a self-locking rear differential work with it.

Four-cylinder pickups go to conquer the second "hundred" after 10.9-12.9 seconds, accelerate to 170-184 km / h, and consume no more than 7.4-7.9 liters of fuel in combined conditions (data on the 258-strong version are not yet available).

With off-road capabilities, the car is in complete order: the angle of entry is 28.8-30.1 degrees (depending on the clearance), the exit angle is 23.8-25.9 degrees, and the ramp is 20.4-22 degrees. In addition, it is capable of driving through fords up to 600 mm deep and forcing 45-degree inclines.

At the heart of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is a ladder frame made of high-strength steel grades. "In a circle" the car is equipped with dependent suspensions: in front - double wishbones, at the rear - a continuous axle, fixed on five levers (in both cases with coil springs, anti-roll bars and passive shock absorbers).
The pickup is equipped with a rack and pinion steering center with hydraulic booster and brake discs on all wheels (ventilated in the front) with ABS, EBD and other electronic assistants.

On the Russian market, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class can be purchased in three versions - "Pure", "Progressive" and "Power" (the first is offered only for the X220 d 4Matic version, and the remaining two - for the X250 d 4Matic).

The car in the basic configuration (equipped with a 6-speed "mechanics") costs a minimum of 2,899,000 rubles and is, in fact, a "workhorse" with 17-inch steel wheels and unpainted bumpers. Yes, and it is equipped quite simply: six airbags, air conditioning, a fabric interior, cruise control, an up and down assistance system, a multimedia complex, parking sensors, power windows for all doors, a radio without a CD player and some other equipment.

For the "intermediate" performance of "Progressive" you will have to pay from 3,169,000 rubles ...

Well, the "top" modification will cost 3,499,000 rubles. It boasts (in addition to the above items): alloy wheels, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, LED headlights, a navigator, all-round cameras, leather trim, dual-zone "climate", body-colored bumpers, keyless entry, more advanced information entertainment center and other "gadgets".
